Tis the Season for Planting

Spring is here, at least most of the time.  Officially, yes, it’s Spring.  If you go by the weather, that can be debatable.  Regardless, in our house, it’s Spring and time to plant some seeds.  Last weekend, my husband cut all the plastic water jugs down for Destiny and I to plant our seeds.  We kept the tops because in researching this use of plastic jugs I found out that you can use the tops to go over your new plants to protect them from insects.  Google is a wonderful tool.

We planted various vegetables, herbs and sunflowers.  I just love sunflowers!  Such happy flowers.  We also have shasta daisy plants that arrived from Burpee and those will go into a pot and outside once the threat of frost has passed.  I have my two hanging pots of gerbera daisies out in the flower beds on their shepherd hooks.  My rosemary from last year is still hanging in there and going strong.  Soon it will have some hot peppers for company.  I’ll be shopping for pretty flowers to combine with our vegetables in pots for our container garden.  I’m so excited about this year!  Working with Destiny, in the dirt and watching our labor turn into healthy plants that will supplement our table.  Wonderful bonding moments with Destiny and teaching her the importance of patience as we wait for our seeds to sprout and then the sprouts to grow into full plants and bear their bounty for us to harvest.

I also can’t wait to teach her how to take those vegetables and herbs and combine them into recipes.  We might try our hand at canning and pickling this year.  I think that would be so much fun.  Especially with all the hot peppers we plan to grow.  With some fresh peaches we can make peach salsa or jalapeno jelly.  Yum!!  I know Dan will love that!  Fresh baked pies to share with family and friends.  Salads and other yummy treats to take to family picnics and other functions.  Making food for gifts to give to our foodie friends.  All of these wonderful things are swirling around in my head.  Hopefully Destiny will be on board with all of this and we can learn some of this stuff together.

As things grow and we learn more about the foods we’re growing, I’ll share our journey.  Maybe I’ll even share some recipes.  You never know.  For now, we’re patiently (or maybe not so patiently) waiting for sprouts.  Until then……..happy Spring!!
