Down the Netflix Rabbit Hole

You know what I’m talking about. Someone tells you about a show you might like or you hear something about a show that sounds sort of interesting. So, you decide to watch an episode “just to see” and the next thing you know, you’ve binge watched the first 5 seasons and have to see what happens next. That’s what happened to me with the Hallmark show “When Calls the Heart”. I love this show. I don’t know why other than it’s a nice, wholesome show that I can watch, feel good about what’s going on and enjoy the romance that takes place. Now, I’m not a huge Hallmark fan, not because their movies or shows aren’t good. Simply because I’ve never gotten caught up in the Hallmark Christmas movie frenzie that some others have. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Hallmark store…..lol. But seriously, they make some really good movies that always leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling at the end.

I really like this show. I was so upset when I got to the end of Season 5 and realized that the reason I had to watch all of those shows in such a short period of time because they were going away on Netflix was because Seasons 6 and 7 are not available on Netflix. I had to get them on Amazon Prime and Season 8 is just starting on the Hallmark channel. Don’t tell me what happens, I want to watch for myself. I like this show so much that I decided to read the books the show is based on by Jeanette Oke. I read all six books in her Canadian West series and I’m not on the third book of the Return to the Canadian West series (these 3 are the ones the show is based on). This is great in that it fits with my reading goals for this year. For February, I had down to read three historical romances. Well, by the time I’m done, I’ll have nine read for the month.

The setting for the books is western Canada in the years just before, during and after WWII in a little mining town of Coal Valley (for the second series). The first series was the same area and a little earlier time frame but different towns or villages. The show and the books center around Elizabeth Thatcher, a school teacher from a wealthy family that yearns for adventure. She travels to Coal Valley to teach the children there but also learns a thing or two along the way herself. If wholesome, christian based fiction is what you like to read, then these books are perfect for you. If, like me, you don’t normally find these books interesting, try them anyway. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I know I was and am. I’ll actually be very sad when the books are finished but I always have the show to keep the warm fuzzies going.
